Temporary Importation: If you’re a foreign national visiting India and you intend to take your car with you when you leave, this option will be useful for you. You will have to pay a refundable deposit and adhere to a time limit in order to do this.

Permanent Importation: If you’re an Indian citizen/resident or planning to stay in India for a long period, permanent importation will be the better option for you. Be warned that this entails more documentation, taxes, and duties.

The import duty on cars in India is subject to the car’s engine capacity, make, and model. You will also be subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST) and other local taxes that are applicable. On arrival, the car will go through customs clearance. You have to provide the documentation and pay the required duties and taxes. After the customs officials inspect the vehicle and verify that all the documents are in order, they will grant the customs clearance on the vehicle which in effect is the import clearance.
